Born in Hirzel, a rural area in the canton of Zurich, Switzerland, as a child she spent several summers near Chur in Graubunden, the setting she later would use in her novels. Her books were originally written in German. The translations into English at the end of the 19th century, or the early 1900s, mention H. A. Melcon (1839-1910), Marie Louise Kirk (1860-1936), Emma Stelter Hopkins, Louise Brooks, Helen B. Dole and the couple Charles Wharton Stork and Elisabeth P. Stork.ABOUT THE TRANSLATOR: Elisabeth P Stork, the daughter of a famous Austrian Landscape Artist. She married Charles Wharton Stork. It was his connection, that led to her translating atleast of ten Spyri's books including 'Moni the Goat Boy', Children of the Alps, Cornelli, and Mazli.ABOUT THE INTRODUCTOR: Charles Wharton Stork was an American literary author, poet, and translator. He wrote poems such as Beauty's Burden, Death - Divination and The Silent Folk. He translated the hymn "We Worship Thee, Almighty Lord" by Johan Olof Wallin, and some of the songs of Carl Michael Bellman. He is known to have disliked modernist literature.His translations of the Swedish poet Gustaf Froding were harshly criticized in reviews by Svea Bernhard and Ernst W. Olson but generally praised in an article by Axel J. Uppvall, who along with Olson had also rendered Froding's poems into English.Stork and his British contemporary, C. D. Locock, published several volumes of Swedish poetry in translation. Among the authors they covered were Gustaf Fröding, Erik Axel Karlfeldt, Birger Sjoberg and August Strindberg.
