DetailsDid you know that an oil spill occurs somewhere in the world almost every day of the year? Berger and Mirocha focus on one of the worst spills in historythe 1989 Exxon Valdez oil tanker spillto explain in simple terms and with bold, full color illustrations why oils spills happen, how experts clean up after them, and what effect spilled oil has on ocean plants and wildlife."A good introduction to the subject."BL. 1994 "Pick of the Lists" (ABA) Outstanding Science Trade Books for Children 1995 (NSTA/CBC)ABOUT THE AUTHORS: Melvin found escape from daily troubles in playing music and reading all the books in the local library. In college he studied electrical engineering as well as music, and afterwards played viola professionally before getting a Master's degree in music education. His first book for children, Science and Music, combined his interests perfectly, and set the stage for a long career writing fascinating nonfiction for young people. In 1957, Melvin Berger married Gilda Shulman (now Gilda Berger), also a noted author of children's nonfiction. The two have collaborated on many books, including the ongoing Scholastic Question-and-Answer series. Writing has enabled Berger to answer many of his own questions, as well; he enjoys research and finds that working on one book almost inevitably raises enough issues to lead to another.ABOUT THE ILLUSTRATOR: Paul has been devoted to rendering the intricacies of the natural and human world, finding in his subjects both scientific interest and aesthetic appeal. Today, hes lost count of the number of childrens picture books and pop-ups hes completed since starting his own illustration and design business in 1990. His illustrations and designs have also appeared in numerous adult books, exhibits, magazines, and advertisements of all kinds, as well as on products and product labels. Whether hes painting a rare desert cactus or a scrumptious-looking candy bar, his work is always accurate, well researched, and realisticand it has lots of personality, too. Although Paul has a lifetime of experience with old-school drafting and drawing methods, by now hes abandoned his railroad pen in favor of Bezier curves, and the old waxer machine for the type tool. If you cant tell whether the paintbrush he used was digital or sable hair, he figures his work is successful. These days, a classically trained and computer-savvy artist is pretty hard to find.
