- SAINT TERESA OF KOLKATA
DetailsMother Teresa of Calcutta was an Albanian nun who, through sheer force of personality and belief, had an enormous impact on the care of the poor, the sick and the dying, which resulted in her winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. This is a pictorial history of Mother Teresa and a tribute to her.Sunita Kumar's coffee table book, the first since the passing away of Mother in 1997, is an interesting compendium of iconic photography. The pictures in Kumar's 120-page book are a procession of celluloid hagiography. The pictures of perhaps the greatest documentary value are those of the young Agnes Bojaxhiu in Skopje, and of her youth at the Loreto Abbey in Ireland.ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Sunita Kumar. Born in Lahore in 1942, Sunita now lives in Calcutta. She worked closely with Mother Teresa and is her official biographer and spokesperson for the Missionaries of Charity order. As an artist, she is self taught and through her pictures captures India with its warmth, diversity and vibrancy. Artist Sunita Kumar, one of Calcutta's most influential social figures was, for years, Mother Teresa's confidante and friend. For 35 years, Sunita Kumar was a volunteer worker for Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity, her friend and confidante, her de facto spokeswoman - and, more unusually, her painter. Kumar is married to the former tennis player and industrialist Naresh Kumar, who played at Wimbledon in 20 consecutive championships between 1949 and 1969. Their spacious and beautifully appointed apartment in the centre of Calcutta is barely two miles - but a world - away from the slums where Mother Teresa ministered to the poor.
