This photographic guide are the latest in the Naturalist’s Guide series which specialise in the wildlife of southern and southeast Asia. They are written by some of the leading naturalists of the region and include photographs of a cross-section of species occurring within each region; a mix of the common and widespread alongside the scarce, rare, threatened and endangered.

Each volume follows a similar format, comprising a short introduction followed by discussion on relevant topics within each region, such as Geography and Climate, Avian Biogeography, Migration, Conservation etc. Include a map of the region.

There are 280 species accounts in this volume, each accompanied by at least one photograph, and two species are accommodated per page. Due to space limitations the text is necessarily small and the discussion on Description, Distribution, Habits and Habitats, Timing, Sites, and Conservation is brief.

Photographs are generally of a high quality and captured by some of the region’s leading bird photographers – who could not be delighted to have been standing next to Wang Jiyi when he snapped that Swinhoe’s Rail Coturnicops exquisitus! Colour reproduction is generally good and accurate although there a few obvious exceptions. However, dates and locations are omitted – a cardinal sin in any photo guide.

As with all small guides, the size of each photograph is limited by the available space. For most species the size is acceptable, but for those species where the publisher has squeezed in two images of the same species, the size of both is compromised and the text further reduced, As the title suggest, this photo guide is aimed at general naturalists who might want to identify species they encounter.

Due to their brevity and limited coverage of species’ range (the Indian subcontinent list is just over 1,300 species) this guide cannot aim to compete with the field guides to these regions. For a serious birder their appeal is limited.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS: Bikram Grewal grew up in the dense evergreen forests of India's north-east where he first developed his love for birds. He gave up his full-time publishing career to devote his time to the conservation of Indian wildlife, especially working on rare birds. He is the author of over ten books on birds of the subcontinent and also acts as a consultant on eco-tourism to several Indian states.

He helped conceive the 'birdsofindia' website, which is now the biggest birding site in India and is ranked amongst the top ten birding sites in the world. He is a trustee of the Wildlife Preservation Society of India (WPSI). He was awarded the Lifetime Award forspreading awareness about birds and conservation in India.
