Asa Di Var is a collection of 24 pauris or stanzas written by Guru Nanak Devji (Sri Guru Granth Sahib, Ang 462 to Ang 475). Some people argue that the founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak Dev ji wrote the first 9 together on one occasion and later wrote 15 more stanzas on a different occasion but Professor Sahib Singh and some of the foremost Sikh scholars believe that the whole Var was written at the same place as the Var itself proceeds in a definite uniformity.
The whole Var was compiled by the 5th Guru, Guru Arjan Dev ji in 1604 AD. Among the many sublime hymns, one will find the Asa Di Var.
For the seeker, the matter of importance is the lesson it contains, the message the Guru wanted to communicate to us through the medium of this sublime composition.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Maneshwar S. Chahal has an honors degree in English Literature, a degree in Engineering and a Masters in Public Administration. He has been an army officer, a senior bureaucrat in the IAS, CMD of the Punjab & Sind Bank, and a member of the State Human Rights Commission in Punjab.
In the midst of these multifarious roles, he has continued to be a deeply devoted student of Spirituality, especially of the intensely humanistic Sikh Religion.
His series Way to God in Sikhism offers a lucid and easy-to-understand delineation of the Spiritual path in the context of the Sikh belief system. Starting with the Japji Sahib, it has been warmly welcomed and much appreciated by scholars and lay readers alike.
