He began his career as a reporter for the Tulsa Tribune and later worked as a writer with the UC Office of Press Relations. He was also associated with Chicago's Black Belt as a case employee. He got a chance to serve in the U.S. Navy during the Second World War. He then moved back to New York City and began working with the Humpty Dumpty magazine as a writer.He penned several stories and articles during the time. His works on paper-folding riddles led him to his subsequent journey towards Scientific American for which he wrote a column on recreational mathematics.
