Mohan Das Karamchand Gandhi, popularly known as the father of the nation and global figure was a curious combination of the saint and the statesman, of the traditional and the modern, of the conservative and the radical, of the nationalist and the universalist, of the realist and the visionary. Political mobilization for mass struggle was led throughout India for the cause of socio-economic upliftment of the people, so Gandhiji visited Orissa seven times from March 1921 to January 1946. Gandhian visits in Orissa were highly momentous. Preparation of Khadi and historic Padayatra for eradication of untouchability were the most remarkable events in the course of nationalist agitation. The present study analyses the Gandhian influence in Orissa which was definitely wider and deeper than the national liberation. The present study makes an enquiry into the causes of Gandhiji's visit in Orissa aiming at bringing about swadesi, satyagraha, non-violence, removal of untouchability, popularizing the khaddar, rural reconstruction and emancipation of women for social solidarity and for radical transformation of the society.
