Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman, is a notable collection of twelve poems that are a great symbol of Romanticism and Transcendentalism.

Through his poems in Leaves of Grass, Whitman addresses the natural dualities that are a part of human existence. His poems continually exalt the human body and reveal sensual details about romantic love. By using a free verse method with short lines, Whitman directly addresses his audience, evoking within them, an entire range of human feelings.

In his most famous poem, Song of Myself,  Whitman addresses himself frequently as ‘the poet” of the body and soul. He talks at great length about the yin and yang of human existence such as pleasure and pain, love and loss, life and death which are a natural part of human existence. Whitman frequently praises and respects Nature  by attributing his ability to love to Mother Earth and his ability to experience so many moods to the Ocean. Whitman regards himself as having both Good and Evil within him.

Some of the other poems that can be found in this collection are I Sing The Body Electric, Out Of The Cradle Endlessly Rocking and There Was a Child Went Forth to name a few.

Reception of Leaves of Grass was indicative of its time period. When it was first published in 1855, many critics regarded it as too offensive and vulgar due to its blatant adoration of the human body. In modern times however the response has been quite the opposite. It inspired an AMC TV series called Breaking Bad, and in 2010 was a Hollywood movie.
