This, profusely illustrated, interim report contains firsthand information about the most systematic archaeological excavations carried out at Dwarka, located on the coast of the Arabian Sea. Its identification with the city mentioned in the Mahabharata, and its association with Lord Krishna make it one of the most significant archaeological sites in India. Scientific investigations conducted by the Underwater Archaeology Wing of the Archaeological Survey of India, between 2005 and 2007, have revealed useful information, datable antiquities and a large number of samples. This brief report provides authentic information on the recent explorations in Gujarat, excavations in the Dwarkadheesh temple complex and in intertidal zone, and underwater excavations in the Arabian Sea. It also gives information about earlier attempts to establish the antiquity of the site. This report is written in simple language and supported with several illustrations. Images not only show what exists but also provide liberty to readers to interpret them without any influence. Hence, this book will fascinate to all those interested in cultural heritage and history.
About the Author :
Professor Alok Tripathi (b. 1965) is a leading archaeologist in the country. He was the founder head of the Underwater Archaeology Wing in the Archaeological Survey of India. As the first underwater archaeologist in the ASI he conducted underwater archaeological excavations off Bangaram Island (Lakshadweep), Mahabalipuram, Dwarka, Elephanta, etc. As a deep sea diver he is a renowned authority in Asia-pacific region on underwater archaeology. Presently Director, Centre for Archaeology and Museology, and Head, Department of History in the Assam University, Silchar he holds equal authority in field archaeology, museology, heritage management, art and architecture, laws, remote sensing, and art-history. Widely travelled in several countries in Europe, Africa and Asia, he has successfully executed many prestigious projects and directed important archaeological excavations on land as well as underwater. Author and editor of 12 monographs and 75 research papers he was listed among the ten brightest young scientists in the country.
