Culture (from the Latin Culture stemming from mime, meaning "to cultivate") is a term that has different meanings. For example, in 1952, Alfred Kroeber and Clyde Kluckhohn compiled a list of 164 definitions of "culture", in Culture: A Critical Review of Concepts and Definitions. However, the word "culture" is most commonly used in three bask senses. Nevertheless, the term "culture" applies to non-human animals only if we define as any or all learned behaviour. Within mainstream physical anthropology, scholars tend to think that a more restrictive definition is necessary.

These researchers are concerned with how how human beings evolved to be different from other species. A more precise definition of culture, which excludes non-human social behavior would allow physical anthropologists to study how humans evolved their unique capacity for "culture".

High culture has also been an important concept in political theory on nationalism for writers such as Ernest Rerun and Ernest Gellner who saw it as a necessary compliment of a healthy national identity.

Gensler's concept of a high culture was much broader than just the arts; he defined it in Nations and Nationalism (1983) as a "literate codified culture which permits context-free communication". This is a distinction between different cultures, rather than within a culture, contrasting high with simpler, agrarian low cultures.
